Given the limitations of the adaptation, Giles Croft’s production does a perfectly decent job. Although we see Baba’s insensitivity to his poetry-loving son, we lose sight of the big-heartedness that makes him give all his meat, in the Eid festival, to the poor and that later justifies the description of him as “a great man”. No mention is made of the fact that Assef, the knuckleduster-brandishing bully who torments Amir and Hassan, is an ardent disciple of Hitler.
